Your members breathe ten times harder in here

At rest, a person moves around 5 to 8 litres of air a minute. During a workout, 40 to 60 through the mouth, bypassing the nose's filtration. Whatever is in your air, your members get far more of it than they would anywhere else in their day.

Five things that affect the air in a gym

Slide to see

1. People

Thirty people exercising hard raise CO₂ quickly. It isn't a pollutant at these levels, but it's the best sign of how well a room is ventilated.

2. Flooring

Rubber matting gives off volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially when it's new and warm. That new-gym smell is something you can measure.

3. Cleaning

Sprays used dozens of times a day put particles and VOCs right where someone is about to lie down on a bench.

4. Chalk and dust

Free weights areas and climbing walls put dust into the air, and every movement stirs it back up.

5. Moisture

Changing rooms and wet areas stay humid. Above about 60% humidity for long periods, mould can grow and the building itself starts to suffer.

Measure, Fix, Then Prove

  1. 01

    1. Measure

We put monitors in the spaces that matter: a studio, the main floor, a changing room. After two weeks you know your real peaks, not one reading taken on one afternoon.

  2. 02

    Interpret

We go through the data with you. Often the fix is changing when the ventilation runs or when the cleaning happens, which costs nothing. We'll tell you when it's the cheap answer.

  3. 03

    Filter

Where ventilation can't fix it, we size filtration to each room's volume, not by how many rooms you have.

  4. 04

    Prove

The monitors stay in, so you can show the difference on a screen in reception and answer a member's question with a number.

Let your members know

Gyms we supply get window stickers to show members the air is filtered and monitored. It's a small thing that gets noticed at the door, and it tells people you've thought about something most gyms haven't.

What we'd put in your building

AirGradient monitors

They track PM2.5, CO₂, VOCs, temperature and humidity all the time. Live dashboard, data you can export, and small enough to sit unnoticed or go on display.

SA700 purifier

720 m³/h of clean air for rooms up to 78 m², at 42 dB. It stands on the floor or mounts on a wall or ceiling, so it doesn't take up floor space you could be using. Around £30 a year to run.

Airbon Aura

For receptions, boutique studios and member lounges where a plain white box won't do. An air purifier built as a piece of furniture, in oak and walnut.

A purifier that's switched off has a clean air delivery rate of zero.

Too-loud equipment gets switched off at the wall by whoever is teaching. Check the noise figure before you buy, not after.

What Goes Where

Reception and PT Room

The first impression, and the one place everyone sees the equipment.
Up to ~25 m². Quiet, and often on show.

Studios, Spin & HIIT

The busiest rooms, often with no windows. CO₂ peaks here, and members notice it first.
Up to ~60 m². One SA700, wall-mounted to keep the floor clear.

Main Gym Floor

Long sessions of heavy breathing.
Around 80 m² per SA700. Larger floors need several units, spread so no corner is left out.

Changing rooms and wet areas

Changing rooms and wet areas. Humidity, and the damp and mould that follow it.

Large Open Spaces

High ceilings and big volumes. We size these from your actual room dimensions on a site visit.

Sized for around 3 air changes an hour with ceilings up to about 3 m. Higher ceilings need more, so we always work from your real room volume.

Questions we get asked

Will members actually notice a difference?

What members complain about (stuffiness, smell, a studio that feels heavy by the end of a class) usually comes from ventilation and humidity rather than pollution. Measuring tells you which one you have, which is why we start there.

We've just had the ventilation serviced. Do we still need this?

Possibly not. A service tells you the system works. Monitoring tells you whether it keeps up with a full 6pm class. Those are different questions.

How disruptive is installation?

Monitors plug in and take minutes. Purifiers stand on the floor unless you want them on the wall or ceiling, which we can arrange.

What does it cost to run?

The SA700 uses around 12W, roughly £30 of electricity per unit per year.

Can we see the data?

Yes. It's yours, live, and you can export it. Some operators put it on a screen in reception.
