The first DIY air purifier (2013)
Thomas Talhelm strapped a HEPA filter to a fan to combat air pollution in China. A few magazines picked up his “rediscovery,” and the Beijing Energy Network invited him to lead DIY workshops to help Beijingers build their own air purifiers.
As interest grew, many struggled to find quality parts, so Thomas, Anna, and Gus founded Smart Air to provide affordable fans and filters worldwide.

Certified B corporation™ & social enterprise (2018)
Smart Air quickly became Mainland China’s 11th Certified B Corp™ and the first social enterprise focused on fighting air pollution worldwide through education and clean air solutions.
10th anniversary (2023)
Since 2013, we’ve grown from a small DIY workshop in Beijing to a global clean air movement. We’ve held over 900+ workshops to educate people about air pollution and now sell directly in 19 countries, providing affordable, reliable air purifiers to homes, schools, and businesses around the world.
